Natural beauty! In search of traces in the Bärgunttal valley

The Bärgunttal valley stretches from Baad to the Hochalp Pass and the imposing Widderstein. It is a valley full of lively character, history and natural beauty. A place where nature and agriculture intertwine harmoniously. It is hard to imagine that hunters left their tracks here as far back as the Stone Age. Later, the valley was an access route for the Walser people, who migrated into Kleinwalsertal via the Hochalp Pass in the Middle Ages. Today, it is a popular destination for hikers and mountain bikers, with green alpine meadows, managed huts and high peaks in summer. In winter, it also attracts ski tourers and winter hikers alike - on groomed trails or along untouched slopes.

Bärgunttal valley at a glance

The Bärgunttal, located at the southernmost tip of the Kleinwalsertal, stretches from Baad to the striking peaks of the Hochalp Pass and Widderstein on one side and the Älpelespitz, Heiterberg, Weißer Schrofen and Höferspitz on the other. At 2,533 metres, the Großer Widderstein is the highest mountain in Kleinwalsertal.

The entrance to the Bärgunttal valley is easy to find – where the Bärguntbach, Tura and Derrenbach streams join to form the Breitach. Not far away, the Alpe Widderstein invites you to take a break. For summiteers, the route continues to the higher Widdersteinhütte, which rewards you with a breathtaking panoramic view. Another highlight is the Bärgunthütte, which is a cozy place to stop for a bite to eat in both summer and winter. The circular hike around the Widderstein with spectacular views of the valley and neighboring Hochkrumbach is particularly popular.

Mountain bikers and e-bikers also get their money's worth in the Bärgunttal. In winter, the valley transforms into a true winter wonderland: the snow-covered landscape can be explored in a relaxed manner on groomed winter hiking trails. The valley is also a popular starting point for ski tourers.

The Bärgunttal valley delights visitors with its varied landscape. Typical animals such as the rock ptarmigan, black grouse and alpine chough can be found here. In addition, the Widderstein is the territory center of the only golden eagle breeding pair in the Kleinwalsertal. The high alpine lake is home to rare plants such as feverfew and marsh fritillary - rarities at this altitude. Part of the Bärgunttal valley is also used as alpine pasture: The largest herd in Kleinwalsertal grazes on the Alpe Bärgunt. Around 250 cattle, horses and goats spend the summer in the mountains here. The interplay between nature and traditional agriculture ensures an impressive diversity of species and shapes the lively character of this valley.
